What is Grounding? A Beginner's Guide

If you’ve ever kicked off your shoes and walked barefoot through the grass, you’ve already tried grounding. Simple, right? It’s not a new idea, just the old-fashioned act of touching the earth directly with your skin.

When we first came across the idea of grounding, we weren’t so sure what to think. To be honest, it sounded a little “out there.” But the more we looked into it, the more it made sense. God designed the earth in a way that naturally balances itself. Houses are literally built to be grounded so electricity flows safely. Our bodies carry electrical charges too, so maybe it’s not so crazy to think they might benefit from grounding as well.

Why People Talk About Grounding

So why do people care so much about it? Some research suggest grounding may:

  • Support more restful sleep

  • Help regulate stress and calm the nervous system

  • Reduce feelings of anxiety or tension

  • Ease everyday aches or inflammation

  • Boost mood and energy levels

Now, does walking barefoot really solve all those things? We wouldn’t go that far. But some studies do point to these benefits—and if even a few of them are true, that’s pretty amazing. At the very least, there’s something about being outside—the sun on your face, the grass under your feet—that makes you breathe a little deeper and feel more at ease. We believe that’s part of God’s good design.

That said, we don’t look to the earth for healing our souls or giving us spiritual energy. Only Christ can do that. The earth is a gift, not a god. It’s here for us to enjoy and care for, and grounding is just one small way to slow down and be reminded of all He has created.

How to Try It

The simplest way? Take off your shoes and spend a few minutes outside. Grass, dirt, and sand all work. It doesn’t have to be complicated or fancy.

Of course, depending on the weather (hello, Missouri winters), being barefoot outside isn’t always an option. That’s why we started experimenting with ways to bring grounding indoors.

Our Copperleaf Grounding Board

Out of those little experiments came our Copperleaf Grounding Board Mini. We made it because we wanted a simple, natural piece we could actually use in our daily life. It’s crafted from solid wood with copper inlays—nothing flashy, just thoughtful design with natural materials.

And here’s something kind of wild: as far as we can tell, it’s the only grounding board on the market. Most grounding products out there are mats made of synthetic materials. We wanted something better—something that looks beautiful in your home, feels natural, is natural, and actually lasts.
